The book of Cemetery Records of Randolph County, NC, just calls him Virgil, as does his tombstone. His Death Certificate names him Willie Virgil and the Death Index of NC calls him Willie V. If Willie or William was his birth name, I can find no record of it, and there is no indication that he ever used it.
In the 1920 census his name was again misspelled, as Vergial.
On top of all that, someone misread the name on his Death Certificate as Willis Virgil, and it has been perpetuated on the internet.
I have chosen to use the name on his tombstone.
It should also be noted that the dates on the tombstone are both wrong, according to his Death Certificate.
