Marcus served as a Texas Ranger. Pension application paper states: "... records of this office show that M. M. Duffey was mustered into the service of Co C, Frontier Men of Clay County, Texas, at Montague, Texas, May 20, 1874, for a period of 12 months. This organization was commanded by Capt. E. F. Ikard, and was organized for the purpose of protecting the Texas Frontier against Indian depredations." (signed Robt. L. Robertson, Adjutant General, State of Texas).
He served as Justice of the Peace in Marysville for several years after he left the Rangers. He served two terms in the Texas Legislature. He introduced the bill which designated Lubbock, Texas to be the site for Texas Tech University.
