Herman was the 4th child born to immigrant parents from Switzerland, who brought him across the Atlantic to his new home on the plains of Kansas, where the family lived in a sod house while they strove to improve the land in the 1880's. He threshed wheat as a boy and later made his living as an automobile garage owner in McCracken, Kansas. Herman and Lottie Donecker were married on October 18, 1904 in a triple wedding at the Kueffer homestead in Ness County, KS. Herman's brother Otto and Sister Hermina were also wed on this same day, each of the brides wearing matching gowns. Herman later became a general contractor in McCracken. His death in 1937 was from injuries received while working in New Mexico.
