LOGAN, UTAH: Dennis Dwain Hancey, 84, of Logan , died Sunday, June 14, 2009 at his home in Logan. He was born January 23, 1925 in Newton, Utah a son of James and Mabel Hancey, the eighth of nine children.
He grew up in Newton until entering military service on May 3, 1943. He engaged in World War II while landing on Omaha Beach on D Day +1, he was a heavy machine gunner with the 2nd Infantry Division in the 37th field artillery battalion. Pfc. Hancey participated in the Normandy invasion and in the battles of Monchau Forest, southern Germany, the Rhineland, and Central Europe with the famous Second"Indian Head" division. He wears five bronze battle stars.
Upon returning home from the service he met and married Adeline Jeppesen, they were later divorced. Of this union two sons were born. In 1959 he married Dorothy Herzog.
He was a painter and wallpaper hanger by trade and painted many homes and businesses in the valley. His work was of excellent quality. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and went on many fishing trips with special friends Glenn and Lola Anderson. He was a member of the LDS faith.
He is survived by sons, Dwain (Geri) Hancey and Steven A. (Nanette) Hancey and step-children, Dean (Patricia) Herzog; Lily Smiley; Judy Herzog; Penelope Herzog, 24 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren, brothers, Earl (Norene) Hancey; Orlo (Iris) Hancey, sisters, Melba Buttars and Mozelle Oja and numerous nieces and nephews.
Graveside services with military honors will be held Friday, June 19, 2009 at 1:00 pm in the Newton Cemetery. Friends may call at the Allen-Hall Mortuary (34 East Center) Friday from 11:00 am - 12:00.
