Granddaughter of President Thomas Jefferson.

Ellen was one of Jefferson's favorite grandchildren and she would later recall that he was her earliest best friend. Ellen was a very quiet person and found enjoyment in the silent rides she would take with her grandfather on his lands. In turn Jefferson taught her to become a skilled horse rider.

With her family's encouragement Ellen traveled extensively in the US and was called to the White House by Jefferson to occasionally take over duties for her mother Martha who was an acting First Lady.

In 1825 Ellen married Joseph Coolidge and they lived in Boston, Massachusetts. She would eventually give birth to six children, including twin boys and Thomas Jefferson Coolidge who became a US Diplomat in France.

Ellen and Joseph had a long and happy marriage. She died in 1876.

Monticello houses a large amount of letters Jefferson and Ellen wrote to each other in their lifetime and show the two had a deep trust and love for one another. Jefferson's death in 1826 was a deep blow to Ellen.
