Alexander Donaldson Coffee a national hero and one of the founding fathers of Florence, Al.
Born at Hickory Hill Plantation one of nine children born to General John Coffee.
Alexander lived to be almost 80 years old.
He was well loved by the people of this area.
At his funeral a large crowd gathered on the grounds of Ardoyne his home place.
He was buried in the family cemetery (Coffee Cemetery).

Alexander Coffee entered into acotton mill business with Martin and Weakley in 1849.
He served in Co. C, 16th ala until he was forced to retire due to ill health.
Coffee High School was named in his honor.
He married Ann Eliza Sloss on May 16, 1844 and she died March 22, 1871.
He then married Camilla Madding Jones on Oct 18 1876, they had one child Eliza Croom Coffee aug 18,1879 - sept 5, 1904 ECM hospital is named for her.
Children by first wife: Mary Coffee -she married Edward Asbury O'neal and William P Campbell.
