1905-1908 Served three years in Florida State troops (forerunner of National Guard) in Jacksonville, FL. Made corporal Sept. 5, 1906, with Co. D, 1st regiment of infantry, age 18, while still in high school. He was 5'6", light complexion, brown hair, and blue eyes. Duval High School (class of 1907).

Attended Washington and Lee College (1908-9) and University of Washington, Seattle, School of Mining (class of 1913). He was married in 1911 in Seattle, while in college. On Sept. 27, 1912, he was elected president of the Mining Society at the University of Washington.7 His journal notes that while a student on November 5, 1912 he voted for Teddy Roosevelt for U.S President, the third party "Bull Moose/Progressive" candidate, who came in second to Woodrow Wilson.8

He became a very wealthy real estate investor and civil engineer.9 Oliver was active with the York Rite Masons, Coral Gables, FL; Miami Acacia Club; Miami Stamp Club; North Dade County Chamber of Commerce. He laid the Miami Beach water system. Master - Ocean Bay Masonic Lodge. He was one of 38 charter members of Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce 1921.

Though his wife was Roman Catholic, and he was married in that church, he remained a lifelong Episcopalian. His funeral services were held at Holy Comforter Episcopal Church, Miami, where he was a member.
