Born in Owensboro Kentucky, April 4, 1899, Bess Dockery passed away August 3, 2001.
Bess Dockery has lived in Union County since the early 1950's. After retiring from the Florida East Coast Rail Road Company, she was very active in many local clubs and social groups. A favorite organization was the Blairsville Garden Club, where she held various positions including President. She was the recipient of many awards for her flower arrangements at the local fairs as well as on the state level. Bess also enjoyed playing cards with the Bridge Club and hosting bridge parties in her home.
Bess was a Red Cross volunteer in the days before the inception of the current association, the Union County Hospital Auxiliary. She was very active with the group, volunteering time in the old hospital and nursing home. She assisted with the supervision of the youth group, the Candy Stripers.
Mrs. Dockery was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, where she was affectionately known as the "Archbishop" of Blairsville. Bess was one of the founding members of the Catholic Church in Blairsville and Mass was frequently held in her home in the early days before there was a church building.
