Charlie Mudge, age 87, laid his head on his pillow to sleep for the last time on Thursday, February 7, 2008 and died peacefully at his Aiken, SC resident thirteen years to the day after his wife, Cathy's death. Born in Pieve (Pea-ov), MS, Charlie was the son of the late William Frank and Dixie Belle Lang Mudge. He served his country in the United States Marine Corps during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He and wife Nona Catherine "Cathy" moved to White County from Jacksonville, FL after retiring from Souther Bell Te. & Te. at 55. He began a new career there as an emergency medical technician. They restored the historic Jim Berry log cabin, Hay 180, Blairsville, GA in the mid 1980's and lived there until moving to Aiken, SC in 1999, four year's after Cathy's demise.
Charlie found his true calling when he became a professional model. He was best known as "Santa Charlie" and worked at the Lakeshore Mall in Gainesville, GA for fifteen years and the Woodbridge Mall in Woodbridge, NJ for fifteen years. He also had numerous regional print ads and television commercials to his credit. For the last eight years he lived in Aiken, SC, where he worked locally with the Make a Wish Foundation and other local photographers. In the last years of his life Charlie was well known for his wood working skills, hand carving over 50 crucifixes and many animal head walking sticks and canes. He was a communicant of Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #3684. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Nona Catherine Burke Mudge, four brothers, and two sisters.
