Edward was the son of Horace Hobart and Charlotte Prudden Field. Identified siblings were Horace R. and Henry F.

In 1860, Edward and his wife Marian C. were enumerated in the household of his parents in Beloit, Wisconsin. Edward was recorded as a Civil Engineer.

On 24 May 1864, Edward F. Hobart of Appleton, Wisconsin enlisted as a 1st Leiutenant with Company E of the Wisconsin 40th Infantry Regiment. The unit mustered out of service on 16 Sep 1864 at Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

This 40th Wisconsin regiment was organized at Camp Randall, Madison, in May and June, 1864. It left the state June 14 and reached Memphis on the 19th. It was attached to the 2nd Brigade, District of Memphis, and was assigned to train guard duty and in the defense of the city. It supported a battery, which was engaged with the enemy
during Forrest's raid in August and after the skirmish it pursued the enemy 2 miles.

In 1885, merchant Edward Hobart and his wife Marion C. were enumerated in Las Vegas, New Mexico.

In 1900, Edward F. Hobart and his wife Catherine were enumerated in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

On 18 April 1904, Edward filed for his military pension. His unit was recorded as Company E of the 40th Wisconsin Infantry.
