Mr. and Mrs. Grant Holbrook and son Irvin and Mr. and Mrs. Hoagland of Corning attended the golden wedding of Mr. and Mrs. T. L. DeWees Christmas day In Cedar Rapids at the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Bontroger. T. L. DeWees and Eliza J. Holbrook were married in Corning, December 25, 1879. Mrs. DeWees was born in this County and Mr. DeWees came here when he was 17 years old. The first year it was impossible for them to rent a farm and Mr. DeWees hired out for farm work while Mrs. DeWees taught school for $20 a month to be paid when taxes enough had been collected. They procured a farm the next year. Four children were born to them, Mrs. Bontrager and Mrs. W. J. Meranek being the only children to survive infancy. Mrs. DeWees is 72 years old and Mrs. DeWees is 70.
