A Chautauqua County resident since 1955, he attended Bramwell High School in West Virginia.
He was employed Local 210 Laborers Union in Buffalo. He had also been employed by Welch's of Westfield, Red Wing of Fredonia, Mitchell Food of Fredonia, Kraft Food of Dunkirk, Paragon Drilling of Brocton, and had been a self-employed contractor. He was a member of Lake Erie Baptist Church of Brocton, a past member of the Stockton Community Church, served as Sunday school superintendent, usher and was AWANA leader. He was a member of the Dunkirk Conservation Club, the National Rifle Association, and was a past member of the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 89, Dunkirk.
He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Myrna L. Holtz Hayes, whom he married May 21, 1966; four sons: Dallas M. Hayes of Worchester, Mass., Stephen J. Hayes of Mancos, Colo., Daniel M. Hayes of Cassadaga and Russell W. Hayes of Brocton; three daughters: Pamela J. Prince of Fredonia, Tammy Clark of Rock Hill, S.C., and Sabrina Gonzalez of Madison, Ind.; 20 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; five brothers: Jerry Hayes of Cassadaga, Jack Hayes of Bluefield, W.Va., Bearlin Hayes of Narrows, Va., Robert Hayes of Lynchburg, Va., and Mar Lee ''Marty'' Hayes of Pearburg, Va.; six sisters: Loretta Lopez of Dawson, Texas, Carolyn Cundiff of Bluefield, W. Va., Virginia Collins, JoAnn Baker and Chrystal Niece, all of Pearsburg; his stepmother, Lorraine Hayes of Ripplemead, Va.; a stepbrother, Jack Slagle of Elyria, Ohio; and a stepsister, Carol Cartwright of Anawalt, W. Va.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepfather, Duff Slagle; a stepbrother, J.D. Slagle; and a stepsister, Kathleen Hart.
