Frank Alfred Deis (his real name), was known to me as Frank/Franklin Bartels. Frank Deis deserted from the Navy in 1922 while at Tachoma, WA. I don't know if he and Lena were officially married, but Frank assumed HER maiden name (Bartels) and they lived together until his death in 1953. They had two children one of whom is still living.
I only recently (2012) traced the real identity of grandpa "Bartels," using New York Birth records and his Navy Records.
