This is from "The History of Cowlitz County, Wa.", copyright 1983 by the Cowlitz County Historical Society at the Longview Public Library.
When Henry D. Davis arrived in Castle Rock in the fall of 1886, he was accompanied by five children, one daughter-in-law, and five grandchildren. The party traveled in two boxcars. One car served as the entire living quarters and the other was loaded with furniture and general belongings. The livestock consisted of two Irish Wolf Hounds that had been used for hunting deer in Kansas.
Henry was born in Adams, Madison County, Indiana, in 1832. All six of his children were also born there. He was the son of John and Mary Jackson Davis who had migrated from North Carolina in 1828. This Davis family, of Welch extraction, had come to America some generations before the American Revolution.
Henry married Susan C. Justice in 1856. She was the daughter of Archibald and Emily Shelton Justice. Her family had come from Virginia.
About 1878, Henry, Susan, and seven children moved to Valley Falls, Kansas, where Henry farrned and did carpenter work for several years.
Cyclones, hail storms, and plagues of grasshoppers forced Henry to sell his family farm. He then came to Castle Rock. He had previously secured work here for himself and his two older sons. They were to work for the Northern Pacific Railroad. In Castle Rock, Henry followed the carpenters trade when such work was available, but did as others in that he worked at whatever there was to be done. He once owned and operated what is believed to be the first confectionery in Castle Rock. He built his first home at First and C streets. The building is still in use as a residence.
Henry died in 1910 and was buried in the Whittle Cemetery. Susan died in Granite Fall, Washington on Mar 9, 1924.
