Culver resident Lou Bailey Dobbins died Dec. 9, 2008, at Mountain View Hospital at the age of 70.
Mr. Dobbins was born Aug. 29, 1938, in McMinnville, to parents Clifford and Eunice (Bailey) Dobbins. He graduated from Sisters High School in 1956 and went on to serve in the U.S. Army between the years of 1956-58.
He and Sharon Corwin were married in 1961 and lived in Bend for a year before moving to Yakima, Wash., where they lived from 1960 to 1968. While in Yakima, they owned an orchard, and Mr. Dobbins also worked for Pacific Power and Light as a journeyman power lineman.
In 1968, they moved to Culver, where they farmed until 1964, when Mr. Dobbins purchased Pioneer Energy Company. The Dobbinses owned Pioneer Energy until 2001, when they began Highland Nursery, and continued farming.
Most important to Mr. Dobbins were his wife Sharon and family and his religious faith. He enjoyed flying, farming and hunting.
Active in the community, he served on the Oregon Petroleum Marketers Association Board of Directors and Culver School Board, was a member of Jefferson County Rotary Club, Madras Conservative Baptist Church, Oregon Republican Central Committee, National Knife Collectors Association. He also supported the Jefferson County Fair and was very active in the jail ministry.
Survivors include his wife, Sharon Dobbins of Culver; daughters and sons-in-law, Stacie and Matt Zachary of Culver, Nichole and Rick Roberts of Redmond, Bethany and Dusty Corwin of Culver; grandchildren, Mason and Emilee Zachary and Guy Corwin, all of Culver, Lexy and Jack Roberts of Redmond; brothers, Paul Dobbins of Prescott, Wash., and Murray Dobbins of Crooked River Ranch. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandson Matthew Austin Zachary.
Funeral services were held Dec. 12, at the Madras Conservative Baptist Church, with burial at Grey Butte Cemetery in Culver.
Memorial contributions have been suggested to the Christian Business Men Association, in care of Madras Conservative Baptist Church, or the Matthew Austin Zachary Memorial, in care of Columbia River Bank.
