LORAIN- Woodrow W. "Woody" Mathna, 90, of Lorain, died Thursday, Feb. 5, 2004, in the emergency room of Community Health Partners Hospital and Surgical Center-West, following a sudden illness.
He was born March 27, 1913, in Gibsonburg, Ohio, and had been a Lorain resident for the past 69 years.
Mathna servered as a member of the Ohio National Guard from 1933-1934. He was employed in the Line Construction and Engineering departments of the Ohio Edison Company for more than 33 years and was later employed in a similar capacity by the City of Lorain.
He was extremely active in city goverment, serving as mayor of Lorain for four terms, and as Ward 4 city councilman from 1954 to 1960, and servered numerous other terms as Council-At-Large. Since 2000, he had also served on the Lorain City Planning Commission. He had formerly served as precinct committeeman and was a member of the Lorain County Executive Board for over 50 years.
He was a member of the Emmanuel United Methodist Church for more than 50 years, where he served as a trustee and
Sunday School teacher. He was also a member of the Knights of Pythias Lodge, where he held the post of chancellor commander.
He had previously served as a member of the Lorain Community Hospital Volunteer's organization.
In his younger days, he was an avid softball player. Since his retirement in 1977, he had channeled much of his engery toward stamp collecting. He was a frequent attendee of stamp shows throughout Michigan, Pennsylvania and Ohio, and was a member of both the American Philatelic and
German Philatelic societies.
Survivors include a son, Patrick A. Mathna of Lorain; daughter, Margaret Rose "Peggy" Mathna; brother, Dale Mathna of Freemont, Ohio; one granddaughter, one great-grandson, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathleen (nee Dillon)in 1995; parents, Clarence and Effie (nee Rosenberry) Mathna; and sister Lillian Wettrick.
Friends may call Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9p.m. at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway, Lorain.
Funeral services will be Tuesday at 10:30 am at Emmanuel United Methodist Church, 400 Sixth Street, Lorain. The Rev. Darlene Robinson, pastor, will officate.
