Carl Alexander Atkinson, 52, husband of Delores Rivers Atkinson, died Wednesday, May 6, 2009, at the Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg, Fla. Born in Sumter County, he was the son of Elouise Batie Atkinson and the late Marion Atkinson.

He was a member of Wayman Chapel AME Church in Sumter and attended Friendship Missionary Baptist Church in St. Petersburg. His community affiliations included Pinellas County Foster Parents Association, Male Project Pinellas County Headstart and the African-American Voter Research and Education Committee (AAVREC). He was employed as a bus driver for the Pinellas County School System.

Surviving are his wife, Delores Atkinson, of the home; daughter, a Glenda (Ron) Murphy of St. Petersburg; three sons: Danquez Alexander Atkinson, David Yates and Demetrius Yates, all of St. Petersburg; his mother, Elouise Atkinson of Rembert; sisters Rosylin (Jeff) Weston of Greenville and Adreanne (Gary) Simms of Manassas, Va.; and other relatives.

A graveside service will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday at the Wayman Chapel AME Church Cemetery with the Rev. Laddie N. Howard officiating. Those wishing to join the funeral procession should meet at the family residence by 10 a.m. Monday. The family will receive friends this evening at the Atkinson residence, 2660 Atkinson Road, Rembert.
