Two days ago (i.e. June 25th, 2009) I received one of the presents I most appreciate: pets. I was gifted with 7 fish, being 5 of them very tiny Chinese neons. As usual, I put them on my tank together with my other fish, and everything seemed to be OK, and the new fish seemed happy.

All of the fish were eating and living normally together, the water conditions were perfect and everything seemed to be OK.

Yesterday when I fed them I just could find three of the small neons. I assumed the other were hidden somewhere (they were very small and difficult to see). The three neons I saw seemed ok (swimming normally, eating, etc). But today at feeding time I was a bit worried when none of the neons showed up for food and I coudn't see any of them. I felt that something bad had happened. So I did a thourough search on the tank and there was no trace of any of the neons.

Most likely, the dissapearance can be explained because they must have been eaten by the other fishes. I don't think the other two fishes that came home with them were guilty, as they were together in the same tank before in the pet shop. I didn't know why the other fishes became so agressive and ate the neons (if it was the cause), but my guess is that their small size and perhaps territory owning or so had something to do. Or perhaps they just died naturally and then they were eaten by the other fish.

I usually don't put a name on my pets, as I call them: "little thing", "pretty", "cutie" (well, their Spanish equivalents "guapo", "cosita", etc) or whatever another inspired word. But I put the name "Varitek II" to one of the fish that came home with the neons, in honor to Varitek, Aidan's lovely fish and I put the name "Minnie" on the other fish in honor of Eric's Minnie the Dog, both animals also here on FAG.

Poor little things, even though if I had them for such a short period of time, they were so tiny and small and I loved watching them so graciously swimming in my tank. Even though I only had them for two days, I'm so sorry. But for me just two days were enough to love them.

I don't have any picture of my neons, but I'm enclosing a picture of some coldwater Chinese neons like mines. They were exactly the same like these.

MANY THANKS TO BERNICE H. FOR SPONSORING THIS MEMORIAL WHERE MY FISH WILL BE REMEBERED.
