Vetle came to the United State with his parents and two younger brothers, Eiviand and Halvor, in 1842 at the age of 8 years. He served in the Union Army, Company B, 49th regiment from Wisconsin. Was enlisted under the name William Olson on February 24, 1865 for a term of one year. His Wisconsin residence was the town of Marshall in Dane County, but his military service was credited to the town of Medina in Dane County. He was mustered out with his Company on November 1, 1865 at Benton Barracks, Missouri. Records show that he was 30 years old, had blue eyes, dark hair and a dark complexion and was 5' 6" tall. Occupation - farmer. Sortly after mustering out he moved his family to Freeman County, Minnesota. Several years later they moved to North Dakota arriving in Grafton about 1878. Vetle's wife Aslaug is buried at Concordia Cemetery in Grafton. After her death he moved to Hoffland Twp., Williams County, North Dakota where his sons Hans and Ole had moved four years prior. He lived with his son Ole Barstad until his death in 1923.
