Jenks was the first child of Francis Benjamin and Nellie Beckwith Simpson. His younger sister died at a very young age. He grew up on his father's farm in Marion County, near Jefferson.

His personal life is confusing. In 1930 he was living in Salem with his wife, Irene, and they had been married for one year. He was working as a salesman for a garage. She was a stenographer. He also worked in Salem as a police officer and as an investigator for the state liquor control commission. In 1940 he was back running his father's farm near Jefferson, and it appears that he was married to Iabelle, to whom he had been married for less than five years.

Jenks died in 1949. His death certificate gave his wife's name as Louella, but his obituary said her name was Lucila. He had two daughters and three granddaughters according to his obituary, which was published in the Jefferson Review, 4 Apr 1949.
