Thomas was born in Virginia or Tennessee. He enlisted as a private from Roseburg on Nov. 22, 1855, and was discharged as a private on Feb 6, 1856 at Fort Gordan at the close of the Indian War. He was in Company H of the 2nd Regiment of the Oregon Mounted Volunteers commanded by Col. RL Williams. The company was called into action by the Territorial Governor.

He was a single farmer. Thomas was admitted to the Oregon Soldiers' Home in Roseburg on 1/11/1900 and died of paralysis 5 months later.
