FEARFUL DOUBLE TRAGEDY DEPRESSES ROANOKE

For the second time in less than a month the people of Roanoke have been shocked and depressed by a fearful double tragedy, the second involving the death of two former residents of Roanoke Mrs. A. B. Reid, the venerable mother of Mr. H. B. Reid, and Virginia, his little four-year-old daughter. The details of their sudden demise are most pathetic.
The tragedy occurred Saturday at the Reid home at Dothan, where Mr. Reid moved a few years ago to serve that territory as deputy United States marshal. Late in the evening, while Mr. Reid was away from home and while his wife was out of the house, the clothing of the senior Mrs. Reid or that of little Virginia became ignited before an open fireplace. More likely it was that of the child. In either case the other must have undertook to rescue the one in danger and in a few moments both were burned to death. When Mrs. Haden Reid re-entered the room she found the child dead and her mother-in-law expiring. She was prostrated with grief and at last accounts was confined to her bed. Her daughter, Mrs. J. B. Brumbeloe, hurried, to her Sunday and is still there.
The remains of the two unfortunate victims were brought to Roanoke on the Central train Monday evening and were carried to the home of Mr. J. B. Brumbeloe. From this place they were borne at ten o'clock Tuesday morning to the Methodist church, where funeral services were conducted by Rev. Claude Orear, assisted by Rev. I. F. Hawkins. Interment was then made in the family lot in the city cemetery.
Mrs. Reid was 78 years of age, and was for a long time a member of the Methodist church. She was a lady of intelligence and refinement, and was prominently connected in this state. Many friends who knew and loved her are saddened to learn of her tragic but heroic death. And that the lovely little child should have perished aso like a flower with the dew of the morning upon her, is pitiful indeed. The outpouring of the people to meet the funeral party and to render every aid possible to the stricken ones was evidence of the sympathy and esteem held in every heart.
Only Mr. Reid himself, accompanied by his brother, Mr. R. C. Reid. of Hattisburg, Miss., came with the bodies to lay them to rest, while the spirits of the beloved dead have gone beyond the reach of time and care.
