Mrs. Nelms was born In Pike County on April 27, 1833, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Neeley. She was united in marriage with J, D. Nelms on 1 January 1850.
In 1852 the family moved to Texas where they lived for eight years and returned to their old homo in 1860 before the opening or the Civil War.
Thirteen children were born to the union and nine of these survive. There are 32 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren surviving. The husband died in 1913.
The children are: Mrs. W. S. McConkey of Stonington; J. E. Nelms of McCook, Neb.; Dr. J. N. Nelms, of Taylorville; Mrs. F. J. Wheatley of Assumption; J.H. Nelms of Edinburg; W. H. Nelms, of Springfield; George E. of Caldwell, Idaho: C. O. Nelms, of Hoopesion, Ill., and E. E. Nelms of Plano, Ill.
Although Mrs. Nelms joint the Macon, Illinois Lutheran Church in early age she was not a regular attendant at this church because of Its inaccessibility and she frequently attended the Methodist and Christian churches though never severing her first church affiliation.
