Shirley M. Melton 79
Shirley M. Melton, age 79, of 2075 Newcomer Drive, Galesburg, Illinois formerly of Knoxville and Maquon, Illinois died Friday, July 4, 2003 at 7:15 P.M. at the OSF St. Mary Medical Center in Galesburg, Illinois of natural causes. She was born on April 12, 1924 in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of Frank and Elta Winchester Welsh.
She married Charles Melton on November 23, 1942 in Kahoka, Missouri. He preceded her in death on March 16, 1987.
Surviving are a daughter, Linda (Carl) Baker of London Mills, Illinois; a son, James (Connie) Melton of Washington, Illinois; a close family friend, Alberta Taylor of Galesburg, Illinois; four grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and a brother, Joe Welsh. She was preceded in death by her parents and one daughter: Sharon Swigert.
She attended Brown's Business College in Galesburg, Illinois.
She was a homemaker and worked at the former England's Knoxville Locker Plant in Knoxville, Illinois.
She was of the Methodist faith.
Graveside Memorial Services will be held on Thursday, July 10, 2003 at 10:00 A.M. at the Maquon Cemetery in Maquon, Illinois. Rev. Marilyn Anell officiating. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be made to the London Mills Fire Department or the London Mills Ambulance Service. Hurd Hendricks Funeral Home of Knoxville, Illinois is in charge of arrangements.
Florence Ruelle Welsh is Shirley Melton biological mother.
Leo J. Welsh is Shirley Welsh Melton's biological father, although after Florence died so young Leo could not raise her, so Frank and Elta adopted her and raised her as their daughter.
Leo died in 1975, in Florida, and the family does not know where his final resting place is located.
