A Galesburg woman who died in an accident early Monday was the first traffic fatality this year in Fulton County.
Dead is Mrs. Sharon K. Swigert, 32, of 1790 Meadow Dr.
She was pronounced dead at the scene two miles south of Ill. 9 near Checkrow by Fulton County Coroner George Kauzlarich. He said Mrs. Swigert died of multiple fractures and crushing internal injuries.
Illinois State Trooper Charles Pollitt of Canton, who investigated the 1 car accident, said Mrs. Swigert was eastbound on the Murphy Blacktop road when the car went off the right side of the highway, came back onto the road, went off the left side and then hit a guardrail, which penetrated the car.
Cause of the accident was not immediately determined, the trooper said, and apparently there were no witnesses.
The accident was reported yesterday at 5:45 a.m. by a Bushnell man, who discovered the wrecked car while on his way to work in Peoria.
OBITUARY
The former Sharon Melton was born May 23, 1944, in Peoria, and married Frank Vancil on Feb. 24, 1962, in Galesburg. He died in May 1967. She married Bruce Swigert on Jan. 1, 1970, in Galesburg. They were divorced.
Surviving are a son; Stephen Vancil, a patient at the Canton Nursing Center; a daughter, Laurie Ann Vancil, at home; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Melton, Knoxville; a brother, James Melton, Galesburg and a sister, Mrs. Carl (Linda) Baker, of near Maquon.
Mrs. Swigert was employed at Admiral Appliance Division of Rockwell International, Galesburg. She had attended Spoon River Valley Schools.
Funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Root Funeral Home, Maquon, where friends may call today after 6 p.m.. Rev. William Munson will officiate. Burial will be in the Maquon Cemetery.
