Henry married
1 Matilda Emilia Kruse (1867 - 1931)
2 KATIE A. FRIESEN (1886 - 1972).
During World War I he stood steadfast in a community when Mennonites, especially German-speaking ones, had been assailed as "yellow rats" and "Kraut followers". His store had been painted yellow from roof to sidewalk in the dark of the night because he had refused to install signs, "No German spoken here".
As chairman of the Committee on Exemption, he together with P. H. Richert, J. W. Kliewer and others, travelled to Washington, D.C., to interview the Secretary of War on the problem of a conscientious objector. Often he visited prison camps to intercede for boys who were turtured or to preach to the young men in camp. One of the most challenging experiences was the long night drive to Leavenworth to rescue from freezing death a lad stationed at the windiest corner of the camp.
He was a sponsoring member of the Conference of Peace-loving Churches
(GC Mennonite Pioneers, 1973)
(CBB Krehbiel, Susanna Amalia Ruth (Mrs. Christian) 1840, 6 May 1920 p. 7; MWR Krehbiel, Matilda Emilia Kruse (Mrs. H. P.) 1867, 29 Apr 1931 p.4; MWR Krehbiel, Katie A. Friesen (Mrs. H. P.) 1886, 30 Nov 1972 p. 12; 7 Dec p. 11)
