Entered the Navy as a midshipman in January 1841 and was made Rear Admiral on 30 Oct 1885 and placed on the retirement list at the age of 62 on 8 Sept 1887. He performed twenty-six years and eleven month of sea service and 14 years and ten months of shore duty.
During the Civil War Admiral Davis asw plenty of active service. He was executive officer of the Water Witch when she took part in the engagement with the Confederate ram Manassas in Oct 1861 at the head of the Mississippi passes.
He was in numerous engagements at Forts Fisher, Sumter, Gregg, Moultrie and Battery Bee.
