Earl B. Shore
Earl B. SHORE, member of one of the county's pioneer families and for over 40 years a merchant in Rochester, died at 3:45 a.m. today in Woodlawn hospital. He was 80 years of age.
Mr. Shore had been bedfast with a heart ailment for the past four years and in ill health the last five years. He was admitted to Woodlawn Wednesday noon after sustaining a fractured hip.
Born Feb. 2, 1882, in Rochester, he was the son of Perry M. and Mary Ann SMITH SHORE and had resided in this city his entire life. The Shore home is at 215 West Fifth street.
Mr. Shore, a pharmacist, retired from the grocery and drug business July 1, 1949, after being in business 44 years. He operated a grocery and general store in the 500 block of Main street, located in a building erected by his father in 1877.
The Shore and Wilson store later was known as the Shore and Hart store after Mr. Shore's son-in-law, Ned HART, joined him in business. The latter continued operation of the business after Mr. Shore's retirement until closing it several years ago.
Mr. Shore's father, Perry, opened a general store in Rochester in 1875 while his grandfather, Talbert [SHORE], had operated a grocery here dating from 1861.
The first Shore in the county was Earl's great-grandfather, Michael [SHORE], who with his wife and family emigrated from Virginia in 1833 and established a trading post on the newly-built Michigan road (now U.S. 31), just south of the present Marshall-Fulton county line. There were only three white families living between Plymouth and Rochester at that time.
Mr. Shore was married Nov. 28, 1901, in Indianapolis to Eva Blanche ROBUSH, who died July 2, 1962. He was a member of the First Presbyterian church.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Edgar (Glenden) ADAMSON and Mrs. Ned (Wilnetta) HART, both of Rochester; two granddaughters, Mrs. Monty LOUGH and Mrs. John KRIESLE, both of South Bend; three great-granddaughters, one nephew and four nieces. A brother, A. B. SHORE, died last April 22.
Funeral rites will be Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in the Zimmerman Brothers funeral home with the Rev. James SCHUMACHER officiating. Burial will be in the I.O.O.F. cemetery here. Friends may call at the funeral home after 1 p.m. Friday.
