His father was John Horace Gamble who left shortly after Connolly was born. John Gamble's whereabouts are unknown.

Connolly Currie Gamble, 91, 517 Sixth St., NW died Wednesday at United Church Retirement Home in Newton following a period of declining health.

A retired owner of Gamble's Grocery, he was born Jul 27, 1891, in Watkins Glen, NY, a son of the late John H. and Carrie Holden Gamble. He operated his store for 16 years.

Gamble, who was a veteran of World War I, when he was a chief of the Selective Service Board and later served as District Service officer for the NC Division of Veteran Affairs, was a charter member of Hickory American Legion Post 48. He was the oldest member of First Presbyterian Church, where he served as a choir member for more than 60 years, and led music for children and youth in vacation Bible school. He led a mission chapel for what is now Belk Memorial Presbyterian Church.

After his retirement, he assisted his wife, Rachel Pugh Gamble, who survives, at Sarah's Flowers until her retirement in 1971.

In addition to his wife, surviving are a son, Connolly C. Gamble Jr. of Collegeville, PA; two daughters, Rachel Gamble Yandell of Charlotte and Bettie Rainey Gamble Bernhardt of Summerville, SC; nine grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church, conducted by Drs. Robert Ratchford and David McKee. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
