Charles, the son of Louis Abraham Johnson and Helen Norma Johnson of Portland OR enlisted in the US Navy on December 11, 1961 reenlisting on March 19, 1963, in Portland OR. He arrived in Vietnam and was assigned as a Medical Corpsman to H&S Company, attached to Company G, 2d Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

A patrol from Company G was on a road sweep of Highway 1 in Hoa Vang District of Quang Nam Province when a command detonated mine exploded midway to the Hai Van Pass killing HN Johnson by deadly fragmentation wounds to his body.

* His brother, Sgt Clifford Thomas Johnson USA was killed in action in Vietnam on December 7, 1970 and is also interred at the Willamette National Cemetery.
