Bertha Highfill Dies Friday Night In Leavenworth

Mrs. Bertha Highfill, 63, 220 Osage, a native of Leavenworth, died at 10:30 p.m. Friday [Oct 10] at her home. Although Mrs. Highfill had been in failing health for the last two years, her death was unexpected.

Born in Leavenworth February 15, 1889, Mrs. Highfill was a daughter of Adolph and Mary Pohl Kreutzer. Her marriage to Thomas Jefferson Highfill was in Leavenworth on December 18, 1907. Mr. Highfill died January 29, 1945.

As a small child Mrs. Highfill moved to Easton with her parents and her home was there until her marriage. They made their home at Potter for 35 years before coming to Leavenworth in 1942. Mr. Highfill was widely known in the Potter community where he operated a farm and ran a threshing machine. Mrs. Highfill was a member of the Methodist church.

Mrs. Highfill is survived by her mother, Mrs. Mary Kreutzer, Easton; four daughters, Mrs. Martine Piper, 317 Market; Mrs. Nellie Noll, 215 Columbia; Mrs. Frances Gillaspie, 220 Osage; Mrs. Mary Stewart, Albuquerque, N.M.,. and one step-daughter, Mrs. Hilda Mollart, Yerington, Nev.; five sons, Harry Highfill, Bethel, Kas., Benjamin Highfill, RR1, Atchison, Adolph Highfill, Kansas City, Mo., Thomas J. Highfill, 217 Columbia, and Norman Highfill, Twenty-Second and Spruce; four brothers, Adolph, William, Henry and John Kreutzer, all of Easton; four sisters, Mrs. Anna Glettig, Topeka, Mrs. Rosa Hand, Mrs. Alvina Abel, and Mrs. Alma Pauly, all of Easton, and 18 grandchildren.

Funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Monday [Oct 13] at the Davis funeral church. The Rev. Duff D. Wagoner, pastor of the First Methodist church, officiated. Burial was in the Fairview cemetery near Potter. The body was removed to the home Sunday morning where it remained until 10 a.m. Monday when it was returned to the Davis chapel.

Pallbearers were Ellis Gillaspie, Floyd Piper, Leo Noll, George Steward, Henry Glettig and Edward Wohlgemuth. -- The Leavenworth Times.
