The son of Jacob B. & Margaretta (Lynch) Eckman, in 1850 he was living in Carroll County, Maryland, but by 1860 was a laborer living with and/or working for machinist N. K. Stoner in West Lampeter Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of eighteen in Lancaster August 1, 1862, mustered into federal service there August 11 as a private with Co. A, 122nd Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 15, 1863.
He married Louisa Horner or Harner and fathered Jacob Lytle (b. 11/25/69), Harry B. (b. 01/03/70), and John Elias (b. 05/??/74). He was a hostler working for Lancaster's Exchange Hotel when he died suddenly for reasons as yet unknown.
