~

One of the real, early settlers of this town, came here in 1900 when the place was a wee bit in size, passed over the river last Sunday morning around 7:00. His name was Dr. J.R. Sledge. The funeral took place Monday at 6 p.m. at the Episcopal church, East McHarg Avenue, with Rev. Dick O’Brien, of Stamford, in charge of the services. Interment took place in Highland cemetery with Dennis-Barrow Undertaking establishment in charge of arrangements.
Besides his widow, Dr. Sledge is survived by a daughter, Mrs. C.R. Penick of Greenburg, KY, and two sons: John Blakeley Sledge of Los Angeles, CA; and Charles B. Sledge of Stamford, and two granddaughters: Mrs. John L. Morris of Los Angeles and Miss Jeanette Sledge of New York City.

Dr. Sledge was born in Macon, Georgia, August 31, 1855. At death, he lacked only a few months of finishing his 85th year. As stated above, he had been living in Stamford for 40 years. He came here when tents were far more common than houses, for the Swensons had just launched the town in the latter part 1899. He saw this town grow from a mass of mesquite trees, buffalo and mesquite grass, with the woods and prairies full of wild game. He saw brick houses take the place of tents, and men who had come here with a little of nothing grow in riches of this world’s good and money.

He saw men who came here with plenty of money make more, for they knew how they made what they had, and they then clung to what they had with the idea of making more to go with it, which they did. He saw men some here pretty well-fixed; go into business and fall flat. In 40 years a man can see a lot of changes, learn a lot of history, all of which Dr. Sledge did.

In his good days, he was a first-class doctor.
A kindly, good woman will carry on at the old house up on North Swenson avenue and just such a son, Charles, will be at her side as she goes down the remaining walk of life.
