Enlisted on 4/17/1861 in Alexandria, VA. for 12 months' service, he was mustered into Captain Samuel H. Devaughn's Company "Mount Vernon Guards", 17th Virginia Infantry as a Private. (This Company was redesignated Company E, 17th Virginia Infantry.)
Promoted to 4th Sergt between Mar & April and May & June 1862 Rolls.
Wounded in head 5/31/1862 Seven Pines, VA.; returned to duty, listed as Present March & April 1863 Roll.
Promoted to 3rd Sgt. 10/25/1862.
Hospitalized 1/9 - 4/21/1863 Chimborazo Hospital #1, Richmond, VA. for head wound suffered at Seven Pines.
POW 7/21/1863 Manassas Gap, VA.; confined Old Capitol Prison, Wash., D.C. 7/26/1863; transferred 7/31/1863 to Point Lookout, MD.; transferred 8/16/1863 to Elmira, N.Y.; transferred 2/20/1865 to James River, VA. for exchange.
