Benji belonged to my Father Dewey Clayton. But, everyone loved Benji. He was just like one of my own. He stayed at my house as much as he did at my Dad's. We lived across the Road from Dad and Benji went with me on morning walks.
One morning for no known reason, I decided to walk up the Road, instead of around the property. As I opened the gate, Benji came racing by me and jumped a coiled Copperhead Snake that was in the middle of the Road. The snake struck him in the side of his little face. He howled and howled. I can only imagine how much that must have hurt. My husband killed the snake and Benji was taken for treatment. I thought he would surely die, being so small. But, Thank God! the snake bite didn't kill him.
Needless to say, I will be eternally thankful to Benji my little friend forever. He was a GREAT pet.
My dad died in January of 1994 and Benji followed on Father's Day, June 19, of that same year.
He will always be remembered and loved and his little heroic act that saved me from being snake bit, will never be forgotten.
