Earl was the second of six children. He graduated from East Stroudsburg State Normal School. On April 21, 1915 he married Myrtle Alice Dailey at the Tannersville Methodist Church parsonage, and the ceremony was performed by Rev. J. Harkness. The couple had five children: Armand, Herman Charles, Mary, Martha, and Donald. He worked for the Erie-Lackawanna Railroad as a fireman for more than 20 years. Then he worked as a postal employee at the East Stroudsburg Post Office for about 20 years until he retired in 1963. He and Myrtle moved to Florida after he retired. After Myrtle died, he married Hazel Meitzler.
