Creed was a son of Jacob and Nancy (Wooten) Puckett. On December 25, 1843, Creed married Sarah "Sally" Brown in Logan County, Kentucky. In 1850 they were residing there with children Angeline, William, Douglas, and Richard. In 1860 they were still there with additional children Bently, Sally, and Mary.
Mr. Puckett enlisted as a private in the Confederate Army on January 7, 1862. On July 1, 1862, he enlisted in Company E, 2nd Kentucky Cavalry (Morgan's Command), at Hartsville, Tennessee.

Some say he was born in 1808 which agrees with the 1860 U.S. census, but the earlier 1850 U.S. census has his age 35 (born 1815).
