Frank Miller enlisted in the United States Army at Lansing, Michigan, on 8 June 1905. He was 5 feet 8 1/4 inches tall, had blue eyes, dark brown hair, and light complexion. At the time, he was working as a harness maker for his father. He served as a Private in Troop "H" 4th Regiment, United States Cavalry from 1 February 1906 to 15 May 1908. His service was the Philippine Islands. On 5 January 1910, he was awarded a pension of $6.00 per month, based upon an injury to his left hand.

His obituary:

Charles F. Miller
Funeral for Charles (Chief) Frank Miller, of 7822 N. Wabash Ave., will be Friday at 1:30 p.m. at Mikeworth's Peninsula Funeral Home. Burial will be in Willamette National Cemetery. Mr. Miller, who was born July 14, 1887, in Charlotte, Michigan, died Tuesday in a local hospital. He was a retired employee of the Portland Housing Administration maintenance department, and was an active Boy Scout leader since 1926 when he started troop No. 78. Men who achieved the rank of Eagle Scout while in Mr. Miller's troop will serve as pallbearers at the funeral.
Survivors include the widow, Tzilla Miller, a son, Grayland Miller, Gresham; a daughter, Lloyolla Miller; three grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Frank's tombstone reflects the birthdate he maintained with the military after he modified his birthday so that he could enlist without parental permission. It was 22 May 1887, but somehow the tombstone was made out as 12 May 1887.
Frank's obituary uses the birthdate that is found in the county birth registration, a register that was created a year after his birth and by a clerk who likely could not read the handwriting on the submitted notice -- 14 July 1887.
Frank and his family celebrated his birthday on 9 July until they received a copy of the county-level registration. At that time they started celebrating his birthday on the 14th.
