Brewerton squad's 'fire lady' Katherine J. Johnson Barclay, the town of Cicero as a volunteer 84. of Brewerton died Tuesday at a local nursing home. A native of Buffalo, Mrs. Barclay had lived in Brewerton 58 years.
She was the daughter of James A. Johnson, who was the architect of the former Hotel Onondaga. Mrs. Barclay was a 1921 graduate of Drexel Institute, Philadelphia, Pa. She was a dietician with several New York City area institutions, and was for a time employed at Ellis Island.
Mrs. Barclay was a member of the board of trustees of the Onondaga County Library Association and was one of the organizers of the Katherine J. Barclay Free Library in Brewerton, which was named in her honor. She also helped organize the Milton Museum of History and Art. She was active with the Red Cross Bloodmobile, the American Cancer
Society and the Brewerton Chamber of Commerce. Mrs. Barclay was one of the original first aid volunteers with the Brewerton Fire Department. Because of her assistance to the department at the fire scenes. Mrs. Barclay was known as the "Fire Lady." She also was known as the "Mitten Lady," as she knitted mittens to help raise money for the library in Brewerton. She also worked in Red Cross Service to Military Families representative. Mrs. Barclay, assisted by others, wrote a history of Brewerton in the early 1970s. Surviving are a son, Robert J. of North Syracuse; two daughters, Roberta Turnbull and Edith Morgan, both of Brewerton; 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Services will be private. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Brewerton. There are no calling hours.
