He was born on July 6, 1944, in Montgomery, AL and went on to graduate from Alabama State University in 1966 wit a B.S. in English. Soon thereafter, he began a storied career in the Meridian (MS) Public School system. As a teacher, he inspired countless students to reach their full potential as scholars, athletes and distinguished citizens.
Under his leadership as an administrator (principal and dept. superintendent), he helped Meridian public Schools become one of the preeminent school districts in the nation with several school being honored as National Schools of Excellence. His success in Meridian garnered the attention of the Mississippi State Department of Education, where he was enlisted as deputy superintendent in 1990. As a conservator and curriculum specialist, he guided numerous underperforming school districts to high-achieving status until his retirement in 2002.
In addition to being an educator, he accepted a call to ministry in 1984. After serving two years as interim pastor at Friendship M.B. Church (Louisville, MS) he became pastor in 1987. As pastor, he grew membership and spearheaded two major renovations, the latest being completed in April, 2009. R.D. Harris will be remembered as a devoted educator, a compassionate friend and an advocate for personal and civic excellence.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, July 10, 2009, at Friendship M.B. Church (506 Jones Ave.) from 6 pm to 8 pm. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 11, 2009, at Mt. Olive M.B. Church (544 James Chaney Dr., Meridian) at 12 pm. Internment will be at Autumn Woods Memorial Gardens (Jackson).
