ALEXANDER WHITE SHARP was born in the Old Pickens District (now "Oconee County"), South Carolina, and a former member of Bethel Presbyterian Church, founded in 1805 by Col Andrew Pickens and Rev Andrew Brown, along with families that included Anderson, Lusk, McWhorter, Hughes, Steele, White, and others.

One specific member of this founding group was "Alexander White" (1765–1852). His daughter, Catherine, married John Sharp. And so it is Catherine's father that Alexander White Sharp is named after.
