July 30-A.T. Shafer, born December 1, 1831, in Vigo county, Indiana, died in his home in Allenville, Ill. July 22, aged 62 years. Mr. Shafer was the oldest son of Mr. & Mrs. Peter Shafer and with his parents, moved from Vigo county, Ind. to Lerna, Coles county, Ill., when a boy, and where he grew to manhood. He was united in marriage to Miss Susan Cassidy of Charleston, July 15, 1874. To this union were born ten children, eight of whom with their mother, are living. They are Mrs. Nora E. Hunt of Lerna, Otto Shafer of Gays, Mrs. Minnie Gaither and Mrs. Eliza Fleming, Aaron and James Shafer of Allenville, Mrs. Alice Nabb of Lerna and Mrs. Ona Mattox of Sullivan. Mr. Shafer was a member of the United Brethren church, having united with that denomination at the age of 18 years. He was a carpenter and was well and favorably known to the people of this vicinity. The funeral services were held Friday afternoon in the home, conducted by Rev. J.W. Mathers. Burial was in the French cemetery. the floral tributes were beautiful. Herald Thursday July 30, 1914
