Mrs. Clara Lee Smith Abernathy, 65, of Connelly Springs, went to be with the Lord, Tuesday, January 18, 2005, at Valdese General Hospital. Born July 21, 1939, in Burke County, She was the daughter of the late Ray Arnold Smith and Pearl Lucille Freeman Smith. Mrs. Abernathy was a longtime member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church where she enjoyed singing in the choir. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend; she will be greatly missed.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Abernathy was also preceded in death by a brother and a sister.

Surviving are her husband of 50 years, Gary Abernathy of the home, two sons, Alan Abernathy and his wife Judy, and Russ Abernathy and his wife Cindy, both of Connelly Springs; a daughter, Sandy Spann and her husband Roger of Connelly Springs; seven grandchildren, Nickisha Burns, Billy Abernathy, Danny Spann, Sarah Spann, Steven Abernathy, Kyle Abernathy and Dustin Abernathy; four great grandchildren, Brooke Nichols, Nathan Nichols, Dillon Nichols and Zoe Abernathy; a step father, Ted Duncan of Drexel; a sister-in-law Barbara Large of Valdese; and special friends, Mike and Reba Fulbright of Connelly Springs. Also surviving are numerous other relatives and friends.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Abernathy will be held 2:00 P.M. on Friday, January 21, 2005, at Shady Grove United Methodist Church with the Reverend Bobby Hallyburton officiating. Interment will follow at Burke Memorial Park. The family will receive friends two hours prior to the services at the Church.

1940 Census - Ray(21) & Pearl(18) Abernathy are found renting their home for $3 a month located in Valdese, Burke County, North Carolina. Ray has a 5th grade education and is employed as a doffer in a cotton mill earning $520 in 1939. Pearl has a 4th grade education. Child living in the home was Clara Lee(7 months) Abernathy.
