TS Ary, director of the U.S. Bureau of Mines under presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush, died April 26, 2009 at his home in Arlington, VA. He was born March 30, 1925 in Eldorado, IL and grew up in Evansville, IN. In 1943, he joined the U.S. Navy's V-5 program and was commissioned as a pilot on a carrier. He served in the Navy Reserves until 1959.

Following his honorable discharge, Ary attended Stanford University and received a B.S. degree in mineral sciences in 1951. He also did graduate work in mineral law, land management, international studies and business. He held executive postions at Anaconda Copper, Union Carbide and Utah International. In 1980, Ary became president of Kerr-McGee's Mineral Exploration Division, responsible for the development of more than 20 commodities in 40 nations.

In 1991, Ary received SME's President's Citation for making significant improvements in the USBM, where he served as diretor from 1988 through January 1993. He was inducted in to the Southwest Mining Hall of Fame in 1992.

Ary was an unabashed supporter of mining. A story in the Washington Post in 1991 talks about Ary snacking on galena, a lead ore, amidst all the furor about lead, to show how safet it is.

Ary received SME's Dickerson Award in 1993 for professionalism and contributions to the mining industry. That same year, he won AIME's McConnell Award "for his leadership in mineral exploration and development and his championship of economically and enivronmetnally sustainable mineral policies for the nation."

Ary is surved by his wife of 64 years, Martha; his son, David and two grandchildren.
