He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on March 7, 1942 in Seattle, Washington. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a mechanic and also as Single, without dependents.
B-17F #42-3486 took off, with a crew of 11, from Station 102 Thurleigh, England on a bombing mission over Halberstadt, Germany. They were attacked by German fighter aircraft and shot down crashing near Lelystad Municipality, Netherlands. There were only 3 survivors.
Roy was first declared "Missing In Action" in this crash and later, once his remains were recovered in 1969, his status was changed to "Killed In Action".
He was awarded the Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters and the Purple Heart.

Roy's name is also recorded on the "Walls of the Missing" at the Netherlands American Cemetery and Memorial in the Netherlands were a "Rosette" was placed in front of his name to signify that his remains were recovered..
