William, a native of Ohio, was a resident of Pella, Iowa, when he enlisted Oct. 17, 1861 at the age of 19 years. He mustered in Co F 4th Iowa Cavalry on Nov. 23, 1861.  William was promoted to Bugler Oct. 1, 1862. He mustered out at Memphis, TN on Dec. 4, 1864.

William applied for his pension in Oregon Feb. 23, 1884.    His wife, Martha, applied for her widow's pension in Oregon Feb. 23, 1904.
