Iowa 1st Regiment Cavalry.
First marriage December 17, 1867, Eureka,Tama County Iowa to Mary Catherine Spears from Des Moines, Iowa. Issue from this marriage, William C. Anna E. and Charles H. Hayward. Hiram was a Postmaster in Eden, Carroll County Iowa.
Living with him in 1880, was his father Chilon Hayward, age 77.
Hiram suffered a wound during action in the Civil War. About 1894, he sold his holdings in Iowa and went to Monongalia County, West Virginia for treatment.
Hiram's second marriage was Jan. 28, 1895, in Monongalia County WV to West Virginia Arnett, daughter of Thomas Arnett and Zarilda Price. No issue of this union. Hiram died sometime after the 1900 census. The date stamp for his Army pension filed by his wife West Virginia, saying "Army Widow" is April 19, 1908.
