Maiden, N.C. - George Walter Rainey, 79, of Rainey Lane in Maiden, passed away Wednesday, July 8, 2009, at Cardinal Care in Lincolnton.
Born Oct. 9, 1929, in Barr County, Ga., he was the son of the late Amos Dewey Rainey and Alma Huley Rainey.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
In addition to his parents, his wife, Bonnie Lee Saunders Rainey; two daughters, Sandra R. Self and Vickie Rainey; grandson, Derrick Rainey; and brother, James Lindell Rainey, preceded him in death.
Survivors include three sons, Mike Rainey and wife, Marsha, of Maiden, Terry Holder and wife, Sandy, of Mount Dora, Fla., and Tommy Holder and wife, Betty, of Pinetown; six grandchildren, Heather Callahan and husband, Eric, Chad Holder, Nathan Self, Greg Self and Beverly Self, all of Maiden, and Tim Holder and wife, Susie, of Denver; seven great-grandchildren; and four sisters, Hilda Black of Cherryville and Virginia Powell, Mary Frances Rainey and Edna Earl Carpenter, all of Georgia.
The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 11, 2009, at Burke Mortuary chapel in Maiden, with the Rev. Ken Faulkenbury officiating.
urial will follow in Lawings Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery, with military honors by members of American Legion Post 240 of Maiden.
