Robert E. Weatherly Sr.

Robert E. Weatherly Sr., 86, of Albany died Monday at his home.

He was born in Newberg, the son of Herbert and Della (Baird) Weatherly. Bob grew up in Newberg and graduated from Newberg High School in 1940. While in high school he helped his dad by hauling cord wood to the Oregon City Pulp Mill.

Following his graduation and while beginning a career as a logger, Bob met and married Mary Jane Johnson on Oct. 30, 1942, in Missoula, Mont. In the summer of 1944 he joined the war effort serving in the 4th Infantry Division. He was wounded in the Battle of the Hurtgen Forest, rejoining his unit at the Battle of the Bulge. After returning from World War II they resumed a logging business in Newberg. In 1955 they moved to Albany and the following year settled in Lebanon.

Bob began long-haul trucking in 1957 and in 1962 opened Economy Supply. In 1983 the couple retired to Waldport but returned to Albany in 1993 for health reasons. Mary Jane preceded him in death on Feb. 25, 2006.

Bob enjoyed fishing, boating and crabbing on the Alsea River. He was active in the Elks, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars in each of the communities he resided and was past commander in Waldport.

He is survived by three sons, Gary, Robert Jr. and Bruce, all of Lebanon; seven grandchildren, Glen Weatherly of Galesburg, Ill., Greta Kirkland of Lebanon, Kathy Dedrick of Washington, D.C., Casie Cooper of Redmond, Judy Weatherly of Vancouver, Wash., Keli Stidham of Lafayette, and Loyd Pete Weatherly of Lebanon; 11 great-grandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by sister Margaret Lane.

Viewing will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Friday at Huston-Jost Funeral Home. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Huston-Jost Funeral Home. Private inurnment will be at the Lebanon IOOF Cemetery.
