Stephen was born in Baltimore, son of the late Charles Ernest and Rosemary M. (Huegelmeyer) Becker.
Surviving are his wife of 33 years, Katharine Andrews (Gregory) Becker at home; five children: Charles Ernest "Chuck" and wife, Evangeline, of Deltona, Fla., Dr. Sarah Marie Eakin and husband, Marc, of Winston-Salem, N.C., Rose Elizabeth of Philadelphia, Amy Jean Becker-Recktenwald and husband, Brian, of San Francisco and Josef Andrews at home; two grandchildren: Corbyn Ernest Becker and Amelia Rose Eakin; three sisters: Carol Lynn Becker of Baltimore, Catherine J. Kirby of Glen Rock and Sandra A. Hollins and husband, Mike, of Freeland, Md.; special nephews: Justin Rowe of Baltimore and John Kirby of Glen Rock, his godson; an uncle, the Rev. Charles Huegelmeyer, M.M., of Maryknoll, N.Y.; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother-in-law, William "Bill" Kirby.
Stephen was a 1971 graduate of Archbishop Curley High School in Baltimore and continued his education at the University of Maryland-Baltimore County, where he graduated in 1975. On Jan. 24, 1976, he married Katharine Gregory at St. Jude's Catholic Church, Rockville, Md. He was a graduate of the University of Maryland School of Medicine in 1981.
Dr. Becker served his residency with Allegheny Family Physicians in Altoona and worked at Hollidaysburg Family Practice from 1984-92. In 1992, Dr. Becker moved to Towanda to become affiliated with Physician Care in the practice of family medicine, where he continued until the time of his death.
He was a devoted husband, father and physician, dedicating his life to the care of others.
Dr. Becker was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Towanda, and the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing and caring for his animals, especially his hunting dogs, Belle and Odette.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. today at Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, 217 York Ave., Towanda. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, July 10, 2009, at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Third Street, Towanda. Interment will be private.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be directed to Memorial Hospital Hospice, 1 Hospital Drive, Towanda, PA 18848; or to St. Agnes School, 102 Third St., Towanda, PA 18848, in Dr. Stephen E. Becker's memory.
